Can we all say hot and humid? The garden has been suffering with this round of heat and humidity with much fungal leaf spot development. This is unsightly but will not harm the affected plant. Plants may be protected with the application of a fungicide in early spring or now if you remove all affected leaves and spray the unharmed leaf surfaces. On the insect scene, leaf hoppers are popping out all over. These insects are vectors which spread disease and should be sprayed to keep viruses from forming. We are observing samples of pine saw fly larvae. These are weird worms, found on the limbs where they feed and all move in unison. They can easily be controlled with one spray application. Not so easy to control is scale on holly and euonymus. Scout these by looking for a black-sooty mold on the leaf surfaces. Red spidermites, which love spruces, are out and about. Check for these by placing a white piece of paper underneath the defoliating, brown needles and tap the branches. When you hold the paper to the sunlight and look closely, you will see little specks beginning to move. If you smear with your finger, you will observe red streaks. Mites can be controlled only with miticides. Lace bug on azaleas are beginning to be a problem. Look for a speckled, stippled leaf appearance.
